Technischer Fortschritt macht es möglich, dass sich das Internet mit der Zeit zu einem dynamischen und sozial motivierten Medium entwickelt hat. Online-Kommunikationsprozesse verlaufen nicht mehr nur noch einseitig, stattdessen wird der Rezipient zum Sender und der Sender wiederum zum Rezipienten. Durch die zunehmende digitale Vernetzung aller Lebensbereiche ist weiterhin mit einer ansteigenden Tendenz zu rechnen und damit auch mit einem immer stärker in den Vordergrund rückenden Anteil an User-Generated-Content. Eines dieser privaten Social-Networks, das auf Grund seiner technischen Anspruchslosigkeit prädestiniert für mobile Geräte und damit auch der zunehmenden digitalen Vernetzung unseres Alltags gewappnet ist, ist die Micro-Blogging-Community 'Twitter'. Twitter ist spätestens seit Barack Obamas beispielhaften Web 2.0 Wahlkampf oder den Einschränkungen der Pressefreiheit im Iran in aller Munde. Privatpersonen, Organisationen, Firmen, Politiker und Prominente nutzen es und veröffentlichen täglich etwa zwei Millionen Tweets. Einige prominente Twitterer versuchen bereits den Einfluss, den sie sich durch die Anzahl ihrer Follower erarbeitet haben, in ihrem Sinne zu nutzen. Sie preisen in ihren Tweets Hilfsorganisationen, Produkte, Webseiten oder andere Twitterer an. Auch Organisationen sind bei Twitter aktiv, sie tun dies über Firmen-, Mitarbeiter oder CEO-Accounts, deren Anzahl an Followern jedoch nicht annähernd an die der meisten Prominenten herankommt. Am Leben Prominenter teilhaben zu können, stellt für viele Benutzer einen starken Anreiz dar und es liegt daher auf der Hand, dass Prominente als Werbeträger auch im Web 2.0 eine bedeutende Position in der Steuerung von Markenpersönlichkeiten einnehmen können.
